Canceling does not brick the app. Topaz staff have confirmed this directly on the company’s own forum: you keep the version that’s current when your subscription expires, minor patches to that version included. What you lose is major updates and new AI models. That changes the math more than the angry threads admit. Pay for one year and you walk away with a permanently working copy of that year’s app, which blunts the worst subscription fear: the tool you built a restoration workflow on can’t be taken away mid-project.
Then the bigger news. On June 25, 2026, Adobe announced a definitive agreement to acquire Topaz Labs, expected to close in the second half of 2026 pending regulatory approvals. Video2X is open source under AGPLv3 and free, with no paid tier hiding behind the word. The model lineup is Real-ESRGAN, Real-CUGAN, RIFE for frame interpolation, and Anime4K, which tells you its heritage: this project grew up upscaling animation, and that’s where it’s strongest. On live-action archival material the results ride entirely on how Real-ESRGAN takes to your specific footage, and the only way to know is to run your reference clip. Setup is easier than you’d expect from an open-source AI tool: Windows gets a GUI installer (release 6.4.0), Linux gets packages and an AppImage, there’s a Docker image, and a free Google Colab notebook lets you borrow a serious GPU if yours isn’t up to it. Blackmagic wired the Neural Engine into NVIDIA’s TensorRT back in version 18.6, and its AI tools, Super Scale included, run more than 50 percent faster on RTX GPUs as a result.
The catch is the version line. Super Scale is a Studio feature; free Resolve doesn’t include it at any scale factor, and the free version’s route to a bigger frame is a plain timeline-resolution resize. The glowing writeups come overwhelmingly from its own content farm and sibling brands reviewing each other, its own blog publishes roundups that it wins, and we could find no meaningful body of independent testing. That doesn’t make the software fake. It’s a real, actively updated desktop app for Windows and Mac (a v4 model update shipped in July 2026) and the vendor recommends an RTX 30-series class card with 8GB of VRAM to run it. What the ecosystem does mean is that every quality claim about UniFab is worthless until you’ve run your own footage through it.
