Sony FX5: What Internal RAW Actually Means for Your Post Workflow

Camera launches are mostly a production-side sport. A new body ships, the shooters argue about rolling shutter for a week, and the edit bay doesn’t notice until the footage shows up. The FX5 is worth noticing now, because the headline feature isn’t the sensor. It’s the codec, and the codec is about to land on your ingest drive.

TLDR

Sony announced the FX5 on July 22: a full-frame Cinema Line body that slots between the FX3 and FX6 at $4,899, shipping August 18. It’s the first FX camera with internal X-OCN RAW and the first with open gate recording. The two new compressed X-OCN flavors put 16-bit RAW in roughly the same storage footprint as the 10-bit XAVC S-I you’re cutting today. The catch: at launch, those new flavors open in exactly one application, and it’s not your NLE. If an FX5 is headed for your pipeline this fall, post needs a plan before the first card comes back.

The headline is a codec, not a camera

The camera itself is a solid mid-line cinema body: a newly developed 16.6MP full-frame stacked sensor, the BIONZ XR2 processor with a dedicated AI unit, 15+ stops in S-Log3, three base ISOs (800, 4000, and 12800), 5-axis in-body stabilization, and a fan that keeps it recording through long takes. All good. None of it changes your job.

What changes your job: every FX body until now recorded XAVC internally, and getting RAW out of one meant strapping on an external recorder. The FX5 records X-OCN internally. That’s the same 16-bit scene-linear RAW family the VENICE 2 and Burano shoot, in a body under five grand. It comes in three flavors: X-OCN LT at 389 Mbps in 4K 24p, plus two brand-new compressed variants, C1 at roughly 289 Mbps and C2 at roughly 232 Mbps. (VENICE’s heavier XT and ST flavors are not on the menu, and those rates scale up with resolution and frame rate.)

Run the storage math and the pitch lands. X-OCN LT works out to about 175 GB per hour at 4K 24p. C2 lands around 104 GB per hour. For reference, the XAVC S-I All-Intra 4K 24p files an FX3 writes today run 240 Mbps, about 108 GB per hour. Read that again: the smallest 16-bit RAW flavor is slightly smaller than the 10-bit All-Intra codec you’re already cutting. For a decade, RAW was the thing you budgeted around. On this camera it’s just another recording mode.

And 16 bits of scene-linear data is the kind of latitude you feel in the grade. White balance and exposure index become adjustments you make in post instead of decisions locked on set, and the three base ISOs mean the files coming back from a dim location are worth grading in the first place.

The part that bites: nothing opens C1 and C2 yet

Here’s the fine print that matters more than any spec. At launch, the two new compressed flavors, the ones with the great storage math, are readable in Sony’s RAW Viewer beta and nowhere else. Not Resolve, not Premiere, not Avid. NLE support “will follow.” Resolve and Premiere already read the existing X-OCN flavors from VENICE and Burano, so LT is the safer bet early, and Sony says a complete format support table is coming alongside launch. Catalyst Prepare 3.0 arrives in August with metadata-based clip selection.

The working rule is the same one I use for .0 software releases: don’t build a paying job on C1 or C2 until the seat that has to grade it reads the files natively. If a shooter tells you they’re bringing an FX5 in week one, have them shoot LT or XAVC S-I, and run a card through your actual pipeline before the schedule depends on it. A codec your NLE can’t open isn’t footage, it’s a support ticket.

The Type A tax

X-OCN recording requires VPG400-certified CFexpress Type A cards. The FX5 has two slots that also accept SD, but SD won’t sustain RAW, so the cards are part of the real price. A 160GB card holds about 55 minutes of LT or roughly 90 minutes of C2, so a documentary day means several of them. The one to buy is the Lexar Professional Gold 160GB, VPG400-rated at $190, because Sony suspended its own card production this spring and the CEA-G160T now runs $360 while remaining stock lasts. You’ll also want a reader that doesn’t bottleneck the offload. Open gate is a delivery feature, not a camera feature

The other first: open gate. The FX5 reads its full 3:2 sensor at 4992 x 3328, which means one capture yields a real 16:9 cut and a real 9:16 crop with pixels to spare. If you’re delivering the same interview to YouTube and Reels, that’s the end of the “shoot it twice or crop it soft” problem. Frame rates hold up too: 5K up to 60p in the 17:9 and 16:9 modes, 4K up to 120p, and 1080 at 240. Open gate itself tops out at 30p, and a promised firmware update later adds 10x X-OCN slow motion in 4K.

Two caveats before you build a workflow on it. Open gate records only in X-OCN until firmware v2.0, which Sony has penciled for August 2027, adds XAVC S-I there. And if you deliver horizontal only, open gate is storage spent on rows of pixels above and below the frame you’ll ship. It’s a tool for multi-aspect delivery, not a default.

Who it’s for, and who keeps their FX3

Sony is explicit that this sits between the FX3 and FX6, and the gaps are deliberate. There’s no built-in ND and no SDI out; both stay FX6 territory, and the missing ND stings more on a camera this run-and-gun friendly. It also moves to the new NP-SA100 battery, 1.3 times the capacity of the FZ100, which means the spares from your FX3 kit don’t carry over. The optional XLR handle is the quiet post win: four channels of 32-bit float audio at up to 96kHz, which turns “the location sound clipped” from a re-shoot conversation into a gain adjustment.

So, verdicts. If your FX30 or FX3 work ships as XAVC to social and doc clients, stay put; nothing about your delivery gets better for $4,899. If you’ve been renting an FX6 or Burano when a job needs serious grade latitude, or your clients have started asking for RAW deliverables, this is the body to test. And as a B-cam on VENICE or Burano productions it’s the obvious pick, because matching X-OCN to X-OCN in the conform beats matching XAVC to X-OCN every single time. Pre-orders are live now: the body runs $4,898 at Adorama, or $5,498 with the XLR handle, with stock expected August 18. The viewfinder and timecode adapter are separate add-ons.

My advice for the post side: you don’t need to do anything today. Bookmark the format support table when Sony publishes it, and the day your NLE ships C1/C2 support, run a test card before your first real conform. The FX5 footage that shows up in your bay this fall will be some of the most gradable material a sub-$5k camera has ever produced. Just make sure you can open it.
