You’ve seen the room. Gray foam wedges on every wall, arranged in a checkerboard, maybe some LED strips behind them. It looks like a studio. It performs like a poster of a studio. The uncomfortable physics is that the foam tile you can buy in a 24-pack for $30 does close to nothing where your dialogue mixes are lying to you, and the treatment that does work is unglamorous, cheaper than you’d think, and partly stuff you already own.
This guide is the version I give friends who ask why their mixes sound different in the car. It covers what sound absorption can and can’t do, why the room you already furnished might be closer than you think, and which panels to buy when you’re ready, at three budgets. No foam checkerboards will be recommended.

TLDR
If you just want the answer: for a normal editing room, four to six real mineral wool panels (2 inches thick minimum) at the first reflection points plus a bass trap in each front corner is the whole treatment plan. The ATS Acoustics 24×48 panel ($79.95) is the value pick; GIK’s FlexRange corner traps (from $104) handle the low end; and if your room has a rug, a full bookshelf, and heavy curtains, you may need less than you think. Foam wedges appear in this guide only as a warning.
Why the foam doesn’t work
Sound absorption is a depth game. A porous absorber (foam, fiberglass, mineral wool) only grips frequencies whose waves it’s thick enough to interact with. A 100Hz rumble has a wavelength around 11 feet; a 1-inch foam tile is invisible to it. Even at 500Hz, right in the mud zone that makes dialogue boxy, effective absorption wants nearly 3 inches of material. Below 250Hz, thin foam does approximately nothing at all.
The industry measures this as NRC, a 0-to-1 absorption score. A 2-inch mineral wool panel rates around 0.95 to 1.0. Typical decorative foam rates around 0.4, and the famous egg-crate style can sit down near 0.1. And here’s the part that makes foam worse than nothing: what little it absorbs is all treble. Coat a room in thin foam and you’ve muted the highs while the 80 to 300Hz mud stays exactly where it was. The room gets duller AND less balanced, and now your dialogue EQ decisions are being made in a room that’s lying in one specific direction.
“But recording studios use foam, I’ve seen photos.” The wedges you’ve seen in real studios are either much thicker than the consumer stuff, doing a specific job in a room that’s already treated underneath, or they’re decoration there too. The egg-carton thing is a full myth. Actual studios are built on mass, air gaps, and a lot of dense fiber you never see in photos.
What an edit room needs (it’s less than a music studio)
Good news: you’re not tracking drums. A dialogue-first mix room has two requirements. First, control the early reflections, the copies of your monitors’ sound that bounce off the side walls and desk and arrive a few milliseconds late, smearing the voice band and making de-noising and EQ calls harder than they should be. Second, tame the corners enough that the room’s bass modes don’t hide a rumble or an air conditioner hum you should be filtering out. That’s roughly 15 to 25 percent of your wall area treated. A music tracking room wants double that or more. You don’t.
Finding the reflection points costs nothing and takes five minutes: sit in your mix position, have someone slide a hand mirror flat along each side wall, and every spot where you can see either monitor in the mirror gets a panel. Repeat for the ceiling over the desk if you’re ambitious (that’s the “cloud”). One panel behind the monitors, bass traps straddling the two front corners, and you’re done. Straddling matters: a panel angled across the corner absorbs far deeper than the same panel flat against the wall.
Tier 0: the room you already own ($0 to $150)
Before you buy a single panel, inventory the room. A packed bookshelf on the back wall is a diffuser and absorber that studios pay real money to imitate. A thick rug on a hard floor kills the floor-to-ceiling slap. Lined curtains soften the window (which is a mirror for sound). A couch is a giant bass-absorbing object. The one purchase in this tier: a door seal kit ($20 to $100). Most home edit rooms leak sound through the gap under the door, and a sweep plus perimeter seals is the only cheap thing in the entire soundproofing world (see the warning below for why that word is different from everything else in this guide).
Tier 1: first panels ($250 to $400)
Four real panels, placed where the mirror trick told you: two side-wall reflection points, one behind the monitors, one on the rear wall. The ATS Acoustics 24x48x2 is the finished-panel value pick at $79.95: a wood frame, dense mineral wool core, fabric wrap, and that 0.95-plus NRC rating. Four of those and the door seal lands around $350 and transforms a small room’s midrange.
The cheaper route is building them: Rockwool Safe’n’Sound batts from the hardware store, a one-by-four frame, and any breathable fabric gets you the same acoustic performance for $25 to $35 a panel. A weekend, a staple gun, six panels, under $250. The store-bought ones are prettier and arrive assembled; the physics doesn’t know the difference.
Tier 2: the full treatment ($700 to $900)
Six ATS or Acoustimac panels covering reflections, rear wall, and a cloud, plus the piece Tier 1 skips: real bass traps. GIK Acoustics’ FlexRange series (from $104) is the one to get. These are thick corner-straddling traps, up to 9.5 inches deep, absorbing usefully down to 50Hz in the deepest version, which is where room modes live and foam has never once visited. Two of them in the front vertical corners is the standard prescription for a 12×14 room. GIK builds to order and lead times run four to six weeks, so order the traps first and hang panels while you wait.
This tier is the endpoint for most editors. Past it, in a room this size, you’re spending real money to move the needle a little.
Tier 3: buy-it-done ($1,400 to $2,000)
If you want one box with everything and zero decisions, Primacoustic’s London 12 room kit ($1,449.99) is the legitimate version of the idea: broadband panels, scatter blocks, mounting hardware, a plan. One warning inside this recommendation: its little sibling, the London 10, is mostly scatter blocks and columns without the broadband panels that do the heavy lifting. If you go the kit route, the 12 is the one that matches this guide’s advice. Alternatively, a GIK bundle (six panels, four FlexRange traps, a cloud) specced with their free room-advice service lands in the same range with deeper bass control.
What about Auralex? Their SonoLite line (1-inch fabric-wrapped panels, NRC 0.80) is foam’s respectable cousin, and it loses to 2-inch mineral wool at similar money everywhere it competes. The classic wedge foam is the thing this article exists to talk you out of.

The word “soundproofing” (read before you spend)
Everything above changes how sound behaves inside your room. None of it, not one panel, stops sound from entering or leaving. Those are different physics: isolation comes from mass, decoupling, and airtight seals, which in practice means construction (double drywall, resilient channel, solid doors), not things you hang on walls. Any product marketed as “soundproofing foam” is wrong twice in two words. If the leaf blower outside is your problem, your money goes to the door seal, the window, and eventually a contractor… in that order, and no panel purchase will change it. Absorption for the sound you make; mass and seals for the sound you don’t.
FAQ
How do I know if my room even has a problem?
Clap once, sharply, in your mix position. A quick metallic “boing” afterward is flutter echo between parallel walls: reflections, Tier 1’s job. If dialogue sounds clear on your headphones but boxy on speakers, that’s the room too. And if mixes that sound right at your desk sound bass-heavy or bass-light everywhere else, the corners are hiding the low end from you: that’s the trap purchase.
Do I need treatment if I only edit on headphones?
For the mix itself, no, headphones bypass the room entirely. You’ll still want the door seal if you record VO, and a dead-ish room helps any mic you ever open in there. This is the one question where “skip the panels” is the right answer, and it’s also why the headphones guide exists.
Where do panels go in a room with a weird layout?
The mirror trick doesn’t care about your floor plan; it finds the reflection points wherever they are. Prioritize: side-wall reflections first, front corners second, behind-monitor and rear wall third, ceiling cloud last. Asymmetric rooms benefit from treating the near wall a little heavier.
Is more treatment ever worse?
Yes. An over-absorbed room sounds dead, mixing in it is unpleasant, and thin-material over-absorption skews dark (the foam problem again, at scale). If the room starts feeling like a phone booth, stop hanging panels. The 15-to-25-percent coverage range exists for a reason.
